The Town and Regional
Planning Department, is under the Ministry of Local
Government and Housing.
The Department
provides state-wide planning services, and functions as an advisor to
the Federal State Government and planning, land use, and development
control matters. The Department provide guidance on Planning and acts as the Secretariat to the Central Town and Country
Planning Board (Central Board).
History
The Department was
officially established on 1st January 1980. Prior to that, the functions
and responsibilities of the department were under the jurisdiction of
the Lands and Survey Department. At its inception it had 21 staff. Now
there are over 100 personnel, stationed in 3 locations: at the Kota Kinabalu Headquarters and at the Branch Offices in Sandakan and Tawau.
Vision
To make provisions and directions for the orderly,
balanced
and progressive development of land within the State of Sabah including
the territorial waters.
To plan the spatial implications and
requirements of sustainable development in order to achieve the best
long-term relationship between the social, economic and environmental needs and
responsibilities of communities.
Mission
To perform duties as empowered.
To establish a
comprehensive, effective and efficient planning system through planning
legislation, planning methodology, planning research, planning standards
and procedures.
To provide technical advice and direct assistance to Local
Planning Authorities and other State and federal government agencies.
To act as an
advisor to the State Government on all planning matters including use
and development of land.
To advise the Local Planning
Authorities on land use matters.
To continuously build a
learning organization that inspires creativity, development and
motivation.
